Detail from "The Trolls"

I've been drawing off and on for as long as I can remember. I took a few painting classes as a kid, but pencil and paper comes more naturally to me than brushes and paint. I'm self-taught and still learning.

What I enjoy most about drawing is watching a scene evolve from a tentative sketch to a clearly resolved picture. Many of my drawings never get beyond the "tentative sketch" stage, but the worst is when I get about 80% done, then lose interest and never finish. More than a few of my drawings have suffered this fate!

Here's some samples of my work over the years:

  Joe Gnoll
A silly comic I drew in junior high and high school, when I should have been paying more attention in class. Gnolls are dog-headed humanoids, depicted here with an uncanny resemblance to a certain famous dog. There were about a dozen characters, but the main ones were Joe and Milo, a paladin and ranger.

  Women
Women have a long tradition of inspiring artists. I took it up in high school, after seeing some pen-and-ink drawings by Larry Elmore that made it all look so much easier than it really is. Faces are nothing compared to hands though. Hands have got to be the hardest things to draw! The good news is, I'm getting better with time. And that's encouraging! =)

  Fantasy
Most of my drawings these days are of the swords-and-sorcery sort. I find them to be more fun than still-lifes, buildings, or landscapes. You can find these and other drawings in my Elfwood Gallery.

A recent sketch evolves...
I agreed to do a drawing for someone who asked nicely on Elfwood. Here it is, from initial sketch to final result. The description I worked from:

Some info.: The main character's name is Toryn and he is around eighteen. His hair is a little bit long for a guy, not down to his shoulders or chin but just slightly long. He has a strong face (my friend Jenny loves my book and requests that he be "strikingly handsome" as she put it). If you want to do a full body sketch, I would prefer him to have a sword (and-big maybe- a hawk on his shoulder?
